23M bond approved for modern aquatic and rec center in SENM

ALL THE MONEY RAISED WILL GO TOWARD BUILDING SOMETHING THE CITY SAYS IT DESPERATLY NEEDS. NEWS 13 )S ALLISON MARTINEZ HAS THE STORY FROM ROSWELL. KIM, IT MAY NOT LOOK LIKE MUCH RIGHT NOW BUT IN A LITTLE OVER A YEAR THERE WILL BE A BRAND NEW RECREATION AND AQUATIC CENTER CENTER HERE. THIS IS THE FUTURE OF RECREATION IN THE CITY OF ROSWELL. BASKETBALL COURTS, AN INDOOR POOL WITH A ROCK WALL, AND AN OUTDOOR AQUATIC CENTER ALL PART OF A NEW 23 MILLION DOLLAR RECREATION CENTER. SOMETHING THIS CITY HAS BEEN WORKING FOR YEARS TO BUILD. IT WILL RELACE THE OLD CAHOON POOL..IN SUCH BAD SHAPE, IT BECAME A MONEY PIT AND THE YUCCA REC CENTER THAT WAS FALLING APART. BUT THE FANCY NEW CENTER COMES AT A COST. MAYOR KINTIGH/ROSWELL MAYOR A total tax will be one quarter of a percent and that equals out to two and a half cents for every 10 dollars in purchases LAST NIGHT THE CITY COUNCIL APPROVED THE 23 MILLION DOLLAR BOND TO FUND THE CENTER. THE TAX IMPLEMENTED JULY 1ST WILL BE AROUND FOR THE NEXT 20 YEARS. i )m totally fine with that and with them building stuff for the kids. Thats amazing, they need something to be done here MOST RESIDENTS SAY THEY )RE FINE PAYING FOR IT Jordan Wimberly/ Roswell visitor “this is exactly the kind of thing roswell needs” BUT CITY COUNCILOR JUAN OROPESA THINKS IT SHOULD )VE BEEN HANDLED A DIFFERENT WAY. Juan Oropesa/City councilor I wanted the public to have a say as to whether they wanted to finance it or not and then of course that would take a municipal bond election OROPESA BELIVES THE WAY THEY DID IT COMES WITH SOME RISKS. You run the risks that at some point youre not going to be able to collect enough gross reciepts to pay the debt that the city is mounting up THE GROUNDBREAKING FOR THE CENTER IS EXPECTED AT THE END OF AUGUST … AND SHOULD BE DONE BY THE END OF NEXT YEAR.. KIM BACK TO YOU. THANKS ALLISON. CAHOON POOL HAS BEEN CLOSED SINCE LAST SUMMER. WHILE THE CITY CONSIDERED OPENING IT UP FOR THE SUMMER JUST TO GET RESIDENTS BY THEY DECIDED IT WOULD COST TOO MUCH TO OPERATE EVEN FOR JUST ONE MORE SUMMER.

  • why don't they do anything in Espanola….. gosh everything is getting better except in Espanola.

  • I know guys, lets spend money we don't have on luxuries we don't need! "How??" you might say?? Easy! The "state" takes out bonds on the market with promise to pay it back over time. "What's the problem then?" Oh, no problem… We all know how well Roswells' market is! What do they get, 5, maybe TEN tourists every year! Amazing! Also, bonds are great because we increase prices on everything for a select few, as will force the children to pay for it in the long run. Just be glad it isn't a sports center with a half a century bond! Your childrens children would be paying for something like that… Anyway, isn't government great? Taking out loans on the backs of children, so altruistic, it's blinding.

  • Remake a beach water park in Albuquerque!

  • can they use less fancy and make it fun?

  • There are a lot of better uses for $23 mil
