How: Freshwater Aquarium Alkalinity KH Buffers | Carbonate Hardness


Hey gang, Devon here from American Aquarium. Got another question of the day. We recommend using a alkaline buffer in many
most set-ups, that way you’re not going to have any pH shift. pH shifts are harsher on the aquarium and
for that reason, we say don’t focus on a specific pH, but make sure you have a enough KH in
the aquarium, to stabilize that pH and so, one of the ways to do that. There’s many different buffers out there,
but you know SeaChem Alkaline buffer is one of the ones out there, so the question was,
in this particle case they were wanting to us some RO, because they were having some
higher KH/GH and nitrate issues in the water. So, they were going to use RO to cut their
tap water. But they wanted to know how much alkaline
buffer should they use? How should they use it? We’ll this is kind of a tougher question. Typically, you need to know based on the chemistry
of your water and how water can even change over time even at your own local resource
of water. It’s really going to come down to measuring
where your numbers sit after you cut your water, also understanding what’s coming out
of the tap. We recommend putting at lease some putting
some alkaline buffer in that water. Your tap water could have enough buffers in
it to make it so you pH wont shift. But you really want to make sure you have
a KH to say 2,3, 5 would be OK. That way your not having a typical , it’s
typical to have a pH swing. The acids that build up in the aquarium are
going to make it so, you’re going to have a pH swing. Really there’s a lot of factors that can go
into this, how much bio-load, the method of your maintenance, but when your cutting with
RO, do a little measuring trying to figure out, where your numbers are sitting and then
how much say right before a water change, what your pH shifted then that will give you
some idea of how much alkaline buffer you should use. So, I know that’s a real generic answer. I hope that kind of gives you a good idea
a good direction of where to go, but your typically not going to have enough KH buffer,
your not going to have enough carbonate, bi-carbonate. You’re going to want to make sure enough in

  • Thank's for this video. I'm using RO water and using seachem equilibrium to raise GH. But after that my KH is steel zero. Now I want to use seachem alkaline to raise KH. Can I use only seachem alcaline or I must use also seachem acid buffer? Thank's.

  • I know for a fact, that my tap ph is 7.0!!!!! I know for a fact that as the chlorine is removed with water conditioner the water ph changes and creeps clear up to 8!!!!!!! Something is happening!!!!!!!!!My kh is 8, which is high!!!! And is whats happening is the kh "carbonates" are unstable and as things in the water are neutralized all those carbonates bond with hydrogen and as a result make the water more hydroxide which is higher ph, above 7. Now if I had a low kh it wouldn't buffer as much and become so damn high!!!!! So don't listen to people who say kh is good, because the higher the kh the harder it is to lower or raise your ph! A good kh would be 2 or 3, that's plenty to resist ph swings. But kh does not mean stable ph at all. I did a 70% RO water change and my ph is still 8, the RO water kh is 1 or 2 and its ph is 6.5 and my tank is still 8.0, that's kh for you!!!! So i'm switching to RO because of this very reason and I'll just add back trace elements and stuff! But kh in my tap is 8 which should keep that 7.0 ph but it does not!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! American aquariums, an answer as to whats happening in my water and why this happens would be appreciated!!!!! KH is carbonates that grab stuff and make them unavailable, so if I put vinegar in my tank which is acidic "more hydrogen" the carbonates in my tank are gonna hurry up and bond with those hydrogen ions and steal them which leaves more hydroxide "OH" which is higher ph! And if my kh was higher it would buffer some more and raise my ph, so just saying that kh can also change ph and make it a pain in the ass to move the ph at all!!!!!!!

    My tap water is 8.1
    I use api water declorinater
    And i add aldercones to my tank , i got a ph pen and it reads 7.7 , so i ordered seachem acid buffer no phosphate if i do it slow and steady so the bn get use to it so not jumping straight till 7.0 just need a following on on my question if im doing it right , i not sure of the Gh ,,or kh but ill wait for ur advise thank you

  • My ph is a mission even the tap water. In the day the tap water is about 7.2-7.8 and at night it can drop to 6.6. I use oyster shells and I saw they were frothing. If I do massive water changes daily it seems okay but how do I remedy this, if I add a buffer to he,p water at night will it make it go to high I. The day?

  • Uuughh I'm so confused lol wasting so much money on crap at the lfs. My problem is I live in Florida and my water GH is 0 and my alkalinity is 0 . But the pH is 7 nitatres nitrides and clorine are 0. How do I fix this??
