Miami Seaquarium reopens Friday after Hurricane Irma


THOSE THIEVES EMPTY-HANDED.>>Louis: MORE THAN A MONTH AFTER HURRICANE IRMA DEVASTATED SOUTH FLORIDA, THE MIAMI SEAQUARIUM OFFICIALLY REOPENED TODAY. IT WAS ONE OF OF MANY THIEM PARKS IN SOUTH FLORIDA TO GET BADLY DAMAGED. JENISE FERNANDEZ WAS THERE TO SEE THE DAMAGE FIRSTHAND.>>Jenise: IT MAY BE FRIDAY THE 13TH, BUT IT’S A LUCKY DAY FOR MIAMI SEAQUARIUM. AFTER BEING CLOSED FOR 36 DAYS, THEY’RE BACK OPEN FOR BUSINESS.>>FIRST DAY OPENING AFTER THE STORM, AND IT’S BEEN A LONG FEW WEEKS, YOU KNOW, AND JUST LIKE EVERYBODY IN SOUTH FLORIDA, IT’S BEEN A LOT CLEANUP.>>Jenise: THE SEAQUARIUM CLOSED WHILE CREWS AND STAFF ROLLED P THEIR SLEEVES TO CLEANUP ARE HURRICANE IRMA. THE SEAQUARIUM WAS REPREPARED FOR THE STORM. THEY HAD A HURRICANE PLAN IN PLACE, THE PARK FAMILIAR WITH HOW DAMAGING A STORE CHB.>>I WAS HERE IN 2005 AND WE HAD A HUGE AMOUNT STORM SURGE ON THE BACK SIDE OF OUR PARK SO WE LEARNED THIS WOULD  COULD BE A POTENTIAL.>>Jenise: SOME ANIMALS LIKE BUD WERE ABLE TO RIDE OUT THE STORM IN THEIR HABITAT BUT OTHER ANIMALS HAD TO MOVE TO HIGHER GROUND. IT’S A GOOD THING THEY WERE MOVED. TREES DOWNED NEAR STRUCTURES AND ALSO A STRONG STORM SURGE. THE SEAQUARIUM FLOODED IN ABOUT TWO FETES FEET OF BAWRT WATER.>>LOTS OF SILT, DEBRIS, THINGS LIKE THAT WP WE DO HAVE DOCKS, NATURAL WOOD DOCKS IN THE AREA SO THE DOCKS DID SUSTAIN AM DAMAGE.>>Jenise: FLIPPER STADIUM AND THE BAY ARE ALREADY CLOSED FOR REPAIRS BUT EVERYTHING FROM SHOWS THE EDUCATIONAL SESSIONS AND ANIMAL SHELTERS ARE FULLY FUNCTIONING.>>THE MIAMI SEAQUARIUM HAS BEEN HERE A VERY LONG TIME.
