Old Tampa city hall looks like a million bucks but scares people working there

STEVE ANDREWS IS GIVING A VOICE TO THE VOICELESS AND TAKING THE POWERFUL TO TASK. NOW, 8 ON YOUR SITE INVESTIGATES. IT MAY LOOK LIKE 1 MILLION BUCS, BUT SOME PEOPLE WHO WORK HERE ARE SCARED TO DEATH THAT IT IS RUINING THEIR DEATH. — HEALTH. TAXPAYERS SPENT MILLIONS OF DOLLARS TO RESTORE, BUT IT IS HARDLY WEATHERPROOF. THAT IS CAUSING PROBLEMS FOR SOME PEOPLE WORKING THERE. ACCORDING TO STEVE ANDREWS, IT HAS MADE ONE MEMBER OF CITY COUNCIL SICK AND ANGRY. SHE CLAIMS THAT SHE IS UPSET BECAUSE SHE CLAIMS THE CITY KNEW ABOUT THE MOLD IN THIS BUILDING BUT FAILED TO INFORM THOSE LIKE HER WHO ARE VERY SENSITIVE TO IT. IT MAY BE AN HISTORIC ARCHITECTURAL GEM BUT THOSE WORKING AT OLD CITY HALL ARE GETTING SICK. I TRY TO COME HERE AS LITTLE AS POSSIBLE. WITHIN MINUTES, THIS COUNCILWOMAN SENSITIVITY TO MOLD KICKS IN. EVERY TIME I WALK IN HERE WITH THE 5-10 MINUTES I AM COUGHING AND TEARING UP. A $60 MILLION RENOVATION THAT BEGAN IN 2017 RESTORED CITY HALL TO ITS 1915 GLORY. BUT, IT DID LITTLE TO STOP MOISTURE AND AIR FROM SEEPING IN FROM THE EXTERIOR. AS A RESULT, THE INTERIOR WALLS ARE BUBBLING AND MOLD IS GROWING BENEATH THE FLOORS AND ON THE WALLS. ACCORDING TO THE CITY’S LOGISTIC AND ASSET MANAGEMENT DEPARTMENT, ONLY THREE EMPLOYEES REQUESTED TO BE MOVED TO DUE TO SENSITIVITIES, HOWEVER, THIS REPORT FROM LAST YEAR SHOWS EMPLOYEES LOCATED ON FLOORS 4-8 EXPRESSED CONCERNS ABOUT THE AIR-QUALITY. AT A COUNCIL MEETING, SHE ACCUSED THE CITY OF KEEPING EMPLOYEES IN THE DARK ON THIS. IN MINISTRY SHE NEVER CONSIDERED THE HEALTH OF THOSE PEOPLE AT ALL. THEY DID NOT MOVE US OUT, THEY DID NOT DO ANY OF THAT. MIKE SUAREZ — I DON’T THINK WE ARE DOING ENOUGH TO MAKE SURE THAT WE CLEANSE THIS MOLD AND EXERCISE ALL THESE FUNGAL SPORES. IF I MAY RESPOND SIR — I DON’T THINK THAT WAS NECESSARY FOR RESPONSE. I THINK IT IS INCUMBENT ON YOU AND THE ADMINISTRATION IN TERMS OF FACILITIES MANAGEMENT TO MAKE SURE THIS BUILDING IS NOT A SECOND BUILDING. WE HAVE TO FIND OUT THE HARD WAY BY COUGHING AND TEARING UP AND SORE THROATS AND HEADACHES. IS THIS A SICK BUILDING? I BELIEVE IT IS. ABSOLUTELY. THE COUNCILMAN BELIEVES THAT WHAT IS IN OLD CITY HALL’S WALLS AND BENEATH THE FLOORS IS AFFECTING HER HEALTH. SHE WORRIES THAT TAXPAYERS WILL GET STUCK WITH THE BILL TO CURE THAT BUILDINGS ALES. HAD THE ADDRESS THE PROBLEM? SHE TOLD CITY COUNCIL THAT THERE IS MONEY IN THE NEXT PHASE OF RENOVATION TO ACTUALLY CLOSE OFF PORTIONS OF CITY HALL AND CLEAN OUT THE MOLD ROOM BY ROOM, AND WE SHALL SEE. THANK YOU VERY MUCH. WE APPRECIATED.
