(SN) I WAS SURPRISED TO SEE HOW MANY PEOPLE CAME OUT TODAY… THEN I TALKED TO THEM AND FOUND OUT IT WAS MORE THAN A BRIDGE TO THEM… IT WAS A PART OF THEIR LIFE. THEY COULDN’T LOOK AWAY…. its been fun just watching it happen. THEIR EYES LOCKED ON IT FOR HOURS… TAKING PICTURES… SOME WALKING ALONG OLD TRAIN TRACKS TO GET A BETTTER SHOT. its kind of a rusty hunk right now. THE OLD SAKONNET RIVER BRIDGE IS BEING DISMANTLED – SLOWLY…. THE METICULOUS PROCESS MAY NOT BE AS EXCITING AS A BRIDGE IMPLOSION… BUT TO THOSE WHO WERE THERE WHEN IT WAS BUILT… KNOW THEY’RE SAYING GOODBYE TO HISTORY…. ive been here since 1936 ive watched every bridge go up and down. my first job out of school was on the foundation of this bridge. i was here when they built that bridge. SANDY FITZGERALD EVEN HAS THE NEWSPAPER CLIPPING OF HER PHOTO AS PROOF. its sad yea. its sad. THE NEW SAKONNET RIVER BRIDGE WAS FINISHED A FEW YEARS AGO… SO THE OLD ONE HAS JUST BEEN SITTING THERE RUSTING AWAY… UNTIL THURSDAY. its a very critical operation these guys are undertaking CREWS FIRST CUT OUT THE CENTER CHUNK…. AND THEN CAREFULLY… PATIENTLY… INCH BY INCH LOWERED IT ONTO A BARGE… TOO SLOW TO SEE … SO I SPED UP THIS 2 HOUR VIDEO FOR YOU…. DANA SUMNER HELPED BUILD IT IN 1953… it was june. THE TIME LAPSE WASN’T GOOD ENOUGH FOR HIM… HE WANTED TO SAY GOODBYE IN REAL TIME. so you wanted to see it get taken down too? i didnt want to laughs. you dont expect something come down that quickly after you build it. (SN) MUCH OF THE BRIDGE IS STILL THERE. THE DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION SAYS THE CONCRETE PIERS WONT BE REMOVED UNTIL 2020. IM STEVE NIELSEN EYEWITNESS NEWS.
