SAND DUNES THAT PROTECT SANDWICH
, THEN SPILLED SAND AND WATER
INTO THE PARKING LOT AT TOWN
NECK BEACH. FROM THERE, THE WAVES ROLLED
INTO THE MARSHLANDS BEHIND THE
DUNES, SUBMERGING SANDWICH’S
FAMOUS BOARDWALK AND SURROUNDING
HOMES.>>THESE HOUSES ARE GONE.>>AT LEAST A HALF-DOZEN
WATERFRONT HOMES ARE DAMAGED,
INCLUDING THIS ONE THAT LOST ITS
ROOF SHINGLES, AND THIS ONE
WHICH HAD ITS CHIMNEY AND PART
OF ITS FOUNDATION RIPPED OFF BY THE POUNDING SURF. AWAY FROM THE WATER, PEOPLE USED
CHAINSAWS TO CUT UP DOZENS OF
FALLEN TREES
SEVEN TREES FELL IN THIS ONE
YARD, INCLUDING FIVE THAT HIT
THE HOUSE. FORTUNATELY, NO ONE WAS HOME AT
THE TIME. EVERYTHING WAS REALLY WET. IT HAS BEEN RAINING A LOT. THE WIND WAS REALLY SCARY. IT WAS A BAD ONE.>>THIS MAY BE THE WORST CASE
SCENARIO, THAT IF THE DUNES ARE
BREACHED, WATER COULD HEAD FOR
MAIN STREET. WILLOW STREET IN DOWNTOWN
SANDWICH DID FLOOD. BUT THEN, THE TIDE TURNED JUST
IN TIME TO PREVENT CATASTROPHIC
DAMAGE TO HOMES AND BUSINESSES
, AT LEAST FOR NOW.>>NOW THE HOUSES BEHIND THE
JETTIES WILL BE IN JEOPARDY.>>THAT IS A LOT OF HOUSES.>>THERE WOULD BE A LOT OF
