Stingray encounter at SeaWorld gets you up close and personal with the fish

>>Fiona: I HAD A SWIMMING GOOD TIME HERE AT SEA WORLD AQUATICA. WE ARE IN THE WATER WITH STING RAYS RIGHT NOW AND JANELLE JOINS ME AND FOLKS CAN DO THIS, RIGHT? THEY CAN BOOK THEIR TIME IN THE WATER WITH THE STING RAYS AND IT ONLY COSTS $20 A PERSON.>>IT’S A GREAT DEAL. IT’S FAMILY FRIEND. YOU CAN HAVE THE WHOLE FAMILY IN HERE FROM THE SMALLEST TODDLER TO THE OLDEST ADULT. WE ENJOY HAVING OUR FAMILIES COME OUT AND VISIT OUR WONDERFUL EXHIBIT WITH ALL OF OUR STING RAYS AND BEAUTIFUL TROPICAL FISH.>>Fiona: THEY CAN WADE IN JUST A LITTLE BIT OR THEY CAN COME ALL THE WAY OUT WAIST DEEP, LIKE WE ARE RIGHT NOW. I KNOW FOLKS MIGHT BE THINKING, STING RAYS. ISN’T THAT DANGEROUS?>>STING RAYS HAVE SOME NEGATIVE CONNOTATIONS BUT RIGHT HERE AT SEA WORLD AND AQUATICA WE MAKE IT A SAFE AND FRIENDLY ENVIRONMENT F OUR STING RAYS AND GUESTS. WE ACTUALLY TRIM THE BARBS IT’S A LITTLE STINGER THAT LOOKS LIKE AN ARROW OR NAIL THAT PROTRUDES FROM THE BACK END OF THEIR BODY AND THEY USE THAT AS A MEANS TO DEFENSE. WE ARE NOT HARMFUL TO THEM. WE ARE ACTUALLY THEIR SOURCE OF FOOD SO THEY WANT TO BE NICE TO US AND WE’RE NICE TO THEM. THERE’S NO REASON TO BE AFRAID TO COME OUT TO K RAY REEF.>>Fiona: THESE GUYS ARE FRIENDLY AND IT MIGHT HAVE SOMETHING TO DO WITH WHAT YOU’RE HOLDING IN YOUR HAND. WHAT ARE YOU FEEDING THEM?>>THIS IS A PERUVIAN SMELT. HOLD IT UNDER THE SURFACE OF THE WATER AND THE STINGRAY WILL SUCK IT OUT. THEY’RE LIKE THE VACUUM CLEANERS OF THE OCEAN. THEY ARE TYPICALLY FEEDING ON THE BOTTOM OF THE OCEAN FLOOR. LOOKING FOR THINGS THEY CAN USE THEIR BONY PLATES IN THEIR MOUTH TO CRUSH UP AND GRIND THINGS WITH A HARD OUTER SHELL. ALSO LIKE CRABS AND LOBSTERS. YOU WANT TO GIVE IT A SHOT?>>Fiona: SURE. YUMMY, YUMMY, YUMMY IN THE TUMMY. OH, HE MISSED IT. SOMEONE IS GOING TO GET IT. IF IT HITS THE GROUND, IT DOESN’T MATTER. THAT’S TYPICALLY WHERE THEY WOULD EAT IT FROM.>>AND EVEN THE FISH MIGHT COME AROUND AND SCOOP IT UP TOO.>>Fiona: AND THE EYES ARE ON THE SIDE OF THEIR HEAD. ARE THOSE THEIR GILLS?>>THEY ARE LOCATED RIGHT BEHIND THEIR EYES. THE GILLS ARE ON THE UNDERSIDE OF THEIR BODY SO THAT WHEN THEY’RE GLIDING THROUGH THE SAND LOOKING FOR FOOD, THEY’RE STILL ABLE TO EXPEL THAT SAND, POTENTIALLY, A WATER THROUGH THE SPEARICALS.>>Fiona: HOW LONG DO THESE GUYS LIVE?>>TYPICALLY 25 TO 30 YEARS WOULD BE AN AVERAGE RANGE FOR THEM. SOME OF THESE — SOME OF THE SMALLER ONES WERE BORN RIGHT HERE AT SEA WORLD.>>Fiona: THEY’RE KIND OF LIKE LITTLE PUPPIES WHEN THEY COME UP, AREN’T THEY?>>THAT’S TRUE. A LOT OF PEOPLE REFER TO THEM AS THE PUPPIES OF THE SEA HERE.>>Fiona: AND FOLKS CAN PET THEM ON THEIR BACKS, RIGHT?>>THE THAT’S RIGHT. SO THEY’RE SILKY SMOOTH. VERY SOFT AND THEY REALLY ENJOY THIS INTERACTION WITH PEOPLE AND WE ENJOY PROVIDING THAT EXPERIENCE FOR OUR GUESTS.>>Fiona: IF YOU WANT AN INCREDIBLE EXPERIENCE FOR AN AMAZING PRICE, JUST HEAD ON OVER TO SEA WORLD AQUATICA.
