This Farm of the Future Uses No Soil and 95% Less Water

NARRATOR: You can’t
see it on the outside, but this old
industrial neighborhood is an agricultural oasis. Inside this former
laser tag arena, about 250 kinds of leafy greens
are growing in huge quantities, to be sold to local
supermarkets and restaurants. This is AeroFarms, a massive
indoor vertical farm in Newark, New Jersey. DAVID ROSENBERG: Our mission
is to build farms in cities all over the world
so people have access to fresh, great tasting,
highly nutritious food. NARRATOR: Crops are stacked
more than 30 feet high inside this 30,000
square foot space. They’re grown using
aeroponic technology. DAVID ROSENBERG: Typically
in indoor growing, the roots sit in water and one
tries to oxygenate the water. Our key inventor realized
that if we mist nutrition to the root structure,
then the roots have a better oxygenation. NARRATOR: AeroFarms
says the root misting system allows them to use 95%
less water than a regular field farm. They also use no
pesticides or herbicides. Instead of soil, plants are
grown in reusable cloth, made from recycled plastic. And instead of the sun,
there are rows and rows of specialized LED lighting. DAVID ROSENBERG: A lot
of people say, sunless? Wait, plants need sun. In fact, the plants don’t
need yellow spectrum, so we’re able to
reduce our energy footprint by doing
things like reducing certain types of spectrum. NARRATOR: This
sophisticated climate controlled system cuts
the growing cycle in half, so crops can be
grown all year round, but with a much smaller
impact on the environment. DAVID ROSENBERG: There’s all
these stresses on our planet. 70% of our fresh
water contamination comes from agriculture. 70% of our fresh water
usage goes to agriculture. One third of our
arable land has been degraded in the last 40 years. All these macro trends
point to the fact that we need a new way
to feed our planet. NARRATOR: One of the early
champions of vertical farming is Columbia University
ecologist Dickson Despommier. In 1999, Despommier
and his students proposed that vertical farms
could feed overpopulated cities while using less
land and less water. They would also cut
greenhouse gases by eliminating the
need to transport food over long distances. And the idea is
finally taking root. Over the past few
years, vertical farms have sprouted all
over the world, including in Vancouver,
Singapore, Panama, the UK, and around the US. Here in Newark, AeroFarms is
building out another new farm in a former steel
mill, one that’s bigger than a football field. Once it’s fully
operational, it’s expected to produce two
million pounds of greens a year– all grown vertically. DAVID ROSENBERG: We
listen to the plants very carefully to
try and understand what they’re telling
us and try and optimize all these different
qualities of the plant. It’s a tough business, but
it’s one that’s going to stay and it’s going to have a
bigger and bigger impact. NARRATOR: Do you think vertical
farms will help solve our food production problems? Let us know in the
comments below. And check out this
next episode to see how this major US city is
striving to become zero waste. ROBERT REED: When I started
at Recology 23 years ago, the recycling rate
was around 38%. Today, we’ve more
than doubled that. NARRATOR: So far, San Francisco
has diverted 80% of its waste away from landfills,
and its success has been getting global attention. Thanks for watching and be sure

  • I can already see this technology being used to grow weed

  • will the plants planted this way will be nutritious?

  • And how many kWh per kg of vegetables, exactly?

  • San Fransisco has diverted 80% of it's waste away from landfills. Where? The waste is on the homeless camp streets.

  • Honestly, this makes me sick. This shits just putting us in deeper in the matrix. Now we aren't even going to be eating "nature's" food. We're going to eating trash that's grown in a closet. Think about this for a minute. Do you really think that we are going to get the maximum amount of nutrition if the plants aren't even soaking in natural sunlight or connected the soil. They're just trying to weaponize this food in a way to have all you fools on board and none the wiser.

  • The 100 wants to know your location

  • F off buddy for providing plastic food

  • In looking into it from an investers point of view, just to check the facts, I ran across application on a larger scale. Viscon, an automation company, has a video on YouTube about a plant they worked in Israel. "Automated Hydroponic System – Harvest in a Greenhouse – Hydroponics and Vertical Farming" They have developed a system for a greater variety, including vine produce. Check it out, it may impress you, and calm the view that it isn't economical. I have a feeling this is going to be big business over time.

  • They forgot the part to tell you that coal is necessary for the power source.sorry but your windmill farms are not gonna work bruh

  • We can also return farms to forests!

  • They have to spray the heck out of these there’s no way to keep pest out of indoor grows they are way worse indoors than outdoors

  • Clever idea misting the roots.

  • Hopefully in near future this helps to eradicate some of the unemployment..!! Best wishes ♥️🙏♥️🙏

  • That's why they went out of their way to take out our farmers and ranchers. Many states with missing people. They never ask. The kill and take. Criminals. Take your fucking food and shove it up your ass!

  • This food should has not vitams ? I think

  • Yes! I think it will help.

  • It’s such a beautiful thing you are doing❤️I’m so proud of you all🥰Cheers to the future🥳

  • Sounds good….uh as long as you have electricity.

  • Suck it, China.

  • How do they produce their fertilizers???

  • Rest all is fine with this vertical farming but one thing is not, ie sun light; should make a mechanism to provide direct sunlight to those trays only then it will be more perfect.

  • Good bye USA economy!

  • I think one day comes that we can grow food all year around with less space and much much less water and it going to feed million of people in very small spaces. It just needs cooperation with science and government in order to provide all necessary information about these kind of farming.

  • My ancestors would say plants do need the sun! There is an energy and an Essence that comes from the soil and the Sun that cannot be duplicated with your light bulbs and plastic

  • Do you think it's better to use artificial light and artificial things to grow vegetables..?????

  • Well, we are housing more and more people vertically, why not produce most of their sustenance vertically? Of course, we could also educate people to stop having so many babies, but that didn't work in China either, did it?

  • The problem with recycling is that recyclers are no longer accepting most plastics and many paper products, so what's a body to do?

  • Cancer

  • It should be all over the world…..

  • Plastic and no sun..must be good for us! I hear cancer!!

  • No way!
Soil is live, live in the soil!

  • I thought this was gonna be a Minecraft video

  • And the other side of that coin is a massive electric bill which is powered by the oil industry which does even more damage to the planet

  • Even in India this is happening many startups are successfully running here.. I have seen one in mumbai

  • How much electricity do they use? And what impact does that have?

  • That is amazing, just change over to solar panels and they'll be good to go.

  • Animal Agriculture. Around 50 to 70 billion animals are killed a year. That’s a lot of animals to feed.

  • We have enough land to feed everyone. However, most of that food goes to feeding animals, especially cows, who consume much more food

  • All vitamins and minerals goes from soil. So I don't buy this crap.

  • I will be impressed when they make a vertical insect farm! ok, I was impressed. This needs to be world wide! #JeffBezos

  • I think indoor farming is going to grow

  • Color me impressed!

  • Saw this on Brasseye about 20 years ago haha!

  • They can't have all the nutrient that we need. Like plastic veg grown in plastic. Profit not health.

  • Let's share this to change the world 7 billion views ?

  • Sounds like she needs to lay off the cocaine.

  • We dnt believe in such farming… we want plant grown on soil with water… where some beneficial and harmful insects will be arround the plant… these kind of technology had made people mad. Only God knows what exactly we need accordingly He has given everything to us. Distorting this we are harming ourself….. even one more child today is burden on earth.

  • Why ain't this being transmitted through MSM every day. People need to know about this great work.

  • I have also looked into the nutritional issue, and every study I found agreed that such produce is more nutritional and has even better flavor. Here is a link to the first source I checked, feel free to dig deeper, of course. I would encourage it.
In summation let me say that this system can be used on a wide variety of produce, is economically sound, nutritionally sound, and leaves a far lesser environmental footprint than conventional farming. If those not already doing so can be urged to switch to alternative energy sources the method would be perfect.

  • Id b growing weed

  • Stop invinting shitty stuff that makes our food less Nutritious and our lives shorter.

  • Partially yes. Need more energy to produce tuber or grains or fruit. Only more efficient for greeny salad vegie.

  • Oh boy I sure can't wait never to hear about this again

  • Rediculous, I don't want it…

  • Ce monde devient vraiment n’importe quoi…..

  • Less people, less hunger!!!!! We are to much! Woman! Stop giving birth like nothing matters! It’s a big impact!

  • Tastes like cardboard. What do you expect from fake food from a fake environment.

  • "uses less water"

Shows videos of non-irrigated, no-till, sustainable farms.

  • Them: Creates a revolutionary way to farm that could save our planet
    Us: haha just like Minecraft

  • I’m pretty sure this would only help food companies get more money by not having to grow real food on a real farm I don’t see how this actually helps the average person with anything.

  • The way of the fork tongued people.

Keep this horror in the west and leave humanity to thrive with nature.

    Carcinogenic monsters.

  • So far every one solution brings out 3 more problems. Experiment, learn, recover, react, rationalize, record, rinse, and repeat. Forcing people to go with your plan is a no win. What do you think?

  • Beautiful boys, nice. One mind at a time..

  • you use 100% less water if you make an infinite water source

  • Farm future uses no soil and 95% less water. But 1000% uses electricity that using coal to make the power. Ummm ok fine.

  • 75% of polution comes from agriculture , uuuuugh ok, BUT uuuh yeaaaah , 100% of any “polution” comes from GREED LOVE OF money is the root of all evil! God should know he created us, soooo yeah lets blame it on Greed NOT agriculture , !

  • Just say no to gmo

  • Woah! We don’t need natural resources anymore. This is the beginning of destruction of this era. We can also cover the entire land with flat surface and build sunroof to cover entire earth so that humans can live inside that without nature. Our so called highly civilised people doesn’t know what is necessary anymore.

  • All greens that don't need pollination. They will need to get the seeds elsewhere.

  • I bet there is waay less good bacteria with this farming method. There's a saying "if it aint broke don't fix it"…. Talk about greed

  • I wonder how high is CO2 there…maybe 5000 ppm XD
    Plants do love CO2!

P.S. There is no greenhouse effect :
This shitty video is made for CNN or other crap-heads like Times?
    Man i disliked instantly…

  • ♥ I believe it's beyond words possible ♥

  • Another way of waste of energy .reduce polution ,save water is only way to overcome all problem.

  • All you need is a metric fuck ton of constant power for the constant lighting, the water systems, climate control, and monitoring

  • This is the future that we want , great work guys !!

  • If beyond meat can be highly successful, I don't see how this cannot be either. The energy consumption is my main skepticism

  • I never fallow any thing and I got to know more I'm a up and coming chef and have big ideas but don't know ware to start evict? Sorry I can't spell so well but all my energy is in cooking and making grate meals for ppl. Why I'm a chef is win I was 9 my dad had to leave for 3 months with court issues and one of the biggest moments in my life is in those 3 months live like a month and some change without power and my dad came home for just a day or two you still didn't have power we all sat around me and my sister mom and dad around the kitchen table and just ate cold SpaghettiOs half happy I'm half just enjoying each other's company that's why I'm a chef I never want anybody to eat cold SpaghettiOs in the dark with candles some ideas information some guidance would be really helpful thank you for your time

  • Visit my channel u love to see pet lovers and friends in the world

  • I hope the governments build huge agrow buildings before the starvation from crop failure happens … yikes eh

  • Very very nice

  • The growth of the market could be attributed to the growing urbanization, rising demand for high quality food with no use of pesticides and herbicides, and independent farming technique with low impact of climatic conditions

  • I feel shit If I saw something natural things inside a warehouse.

  • I believe that our governments have many of theses farms underground so when the shit hits the fan they will just run underground and wait it out!

  • Interesting

  • wonderful

  • we can use this on mars .

  • Those are mercury containing fluorescent light bulbs hanging over all of those plants. How do they decontaminate when those break or leak? How do they detect when they leak?

  • Big-Ups to the Green Party!

  • Jammal is gay

  • Great video and I loved it
. Also, the value should be increased by details of vertical farms "aeroponics" So watch this video :
