Truck submerged in Polk Co. lake, dive team on scene

WIFE ON THE WITNESS STAND. HER LAST WORDS TO HER HUSBAND BEFORE HE WAS SHOT TO DEATH. IN ST. PETERSBURG POLICE NEED YOUR HELP FINDING A SUSPECTED GUNMAN. I AM KEITH CATE. AND I AM STACIE SCHAIBLE. WE WANT TO GO STRAIGHT TO THAT BREAKING NEWS. IN THE LAST HOUR, WE WATCHED AS DEPUTIES PULLED A TRUCK AND A DRIVER OUT OF A GATOR INFESTED WATER CREEK POND AT SADDLE CREEK LAKE. EXCUSE ME. WE’RE NOT SHOWING YOU THE TRUCK RIGHT NOW BECAUSE DEPUTIES ARE STILL TRYING TO REACH THE DRIVERS FAMILY. MELISSA MARINO JOINS US LIVE FROM THERE. SUCH A SAD SCENE. WE DON’T QUITE KNOW WHY HE WENT IN THIS LAKE BUT WE KNOW THE DRIVER, AN ELDERLY MAN, DID JUST THAT A SHORT TIME AGO. THAT’S RIGHT. Reporter: REALLY HEARTBREAKING OUT HERE. WE HEARD FROM POLICE THAT WITNESSES SAY HE ACCIDENTALLY DROVE INTO THE LAKE. WITNESSES TRIED TO HELP HIM. FIRST RESPONDERS DOES IN AFTER THIS MAN. I AM HERE WITH ONE OF THOSE FIRST RESPONDERS. TELL ME WHAT HAPPENED WHEN YOU GOT HERE. THERE WAS A BYSTANDER WHO SAID THERE WAS A MAN IN THE VEHICLE THAT WAS SUBMERGED IN THE WATER. WHEN WE GOT HERE, I PULLED A WATER RESCUE BAG OUT AND ME AND MY DRIVER KICKED OUR SHOES OFF, THREW OFF EVERYTHING WE DIDN’T WANT ON AND PUT ON OUR FLOTATION DEVICE AND WENT INTO THE WATER WHERE THE BYSTANDER SAID THE VEHICLE WAS LAST SEEN AND STARTED SEARCHING AS MUCH AS WE CAN. Reporter: WHAT MADE THE SEARCH SO DIFFICULT? NAMELY THE DEPTH. IT DOESN’T WORK THAT DEEP BUT WE HAD A ROPE 20 FEET LONG AND WE’RE GOING DOWN OFF THAT ROPE AND WE STILL WEREN’T ABLE TO HIT THE BOTTOM. THAT AND THE MURKY CONDITIONS DIDN’T ALLOW US TO SEE MUCH FURTHER THAN OUT IN FRONT OF OUR HANDS. Reporter: THIS IS YOUR FIRST DAY ON THE JOB. DEFINITELY A TOUGH ONE. YES, IT IS DEFINITELY SURREAL. UNFORTUNATELY, WE WEREN’T ABLE TO MAKE THE RESCUE AND I FEEL FOR THE MAN AND HIS FAMILY. BUT IT’S LIKE THEY TELL US IN SCHOOL, YOU HAVE TO BE PREPARED FOR THIS. THE ONE THING I’M GOING TO GET THROUGH IS JUST TALKING WITH MY CREW AND SOMEHOW GETTING THROUGH IT. Reporter: THANK YOU FOR YOUR SERVICE AND FOR
